DPAA and South Korea's MAKRI Forge Stronger Partnership in Recovering Missing Korean War Heroes

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the Republic of Korea Ministry of National Defense Agency for KIA Recovery and Identification, MAKRI, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Arlington, Virginia, Aug. 6, solidifying their commitment to recovering and identifying remains of service members missing from the Korean War.

Keeping the flame of hope burning; WWII lighter reunited with MIA Family

To some, it is an artifact from the greatest generation’s darkest hour; to others, it is a two-ounce, two-inch piece of metal with a simple job, but to one family, it is the link to a hero who never came home. And thanks to the intervention of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency historians and the kindness of a stranger, turned friend, a Zippo lighter carried by missing Army Air Corps Staff Sgt. Michael Musashe is back with his family after 80 years. Like so many mysteries in the digital age, it all started with a Facebook post.

From Sea to Summit: A Summer Cruise in South Korea

This wasn’t the kind of summer cruise you’d find featured in admissions pamphlets. There was no ship, no underway watches, and definitely no galley serving powdered eggs at 6 a.m. Instead, Midshipman 1st Class Nick Feaster and Midshipman 2nd Class Jordan Trantham, students at the U.S. Naval Academy, found themselves knee-deep in dirt on a remote Korean mountainside, wielding excavation tools rather than a sextant. Their instruments were a pinpointer and a trowel and were working with a pair of mountaineers who knew the ridgelines better than any GPS ever could.
