DPAA Marines Celebrate 249th USMC Birthday with Top Pacific Marine Commander

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency hosted a cake cutting ceremony honoring the United States Marine Corps’ 249th Birthday at the command’s headquarters on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Oct. 31, 2024. Guest speaker, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James F. Glynn, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific commander, highlighted the Corps' enduring legacy and the critical missions Marines undertake, especially within DPAA.

Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Marks Benchmark Fiscal Year

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) concluded the 2024 fiscal year, achieving significant milestones in its mission to provide the fullest possible accounting of missing U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.

DPAA Completes First Recovery Mission in 13 years in China

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recently completed an excavation of a suspected P-40 Warhawk aircraft crash site form World War II, found in the Hunan province of China. From early August to mid-September, 12 military and specialized Department of Defense civilians formed a recovery team tasked with searching for and recovering the remains of a pilot lost 81years ago.

Eight individuals were disinterred as part of the West Loch Project: an on-going effort by DPAA to disinter, transport, and identify service members who died in the West Loch disaster during World War II.

A Search for Answers: DPAA Begins Disinterment of West Loch Disaster Unknowns

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — Members of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) worked alongside caretakers of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (NMCP) to disinter the first eight caskets of unknown service members associated with the West Loch Disaster at the NMCP, Oct. 7, 2024. The attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, is well known, but few know about Pearl Harbor’s second tragedy and one of the greatest non-combat tragedies in U.S. history: the West Loch Disaster.
