OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. –
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the Republic of Korea Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs signed a memorandum of understanding strengthening the partnership between the two organizations in Omaha, Aug. 7.
The MOU was signed during the DPAA Korean/Cold War Annual Government Briefing, held Aug. 6-7, which provided Gold Star Families in attendance with the latest information on the cases of their missing loved ones.
DPAA Director Kelly McKeague was joined on stage by Vice Minister Kang Yun-jin of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to announce the signing to attendees.
“The memorandum of understanding that Vice Minister Kang Yun-jin and I have just signed solidifies and strengthens the partnership between DPAA and the MPVA,” McKeague said. “This will enable the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to serve you. And in honor of serving you, to serve your loved ones who they cherish and value as you will all come to understand.”
“I think today’s MOU signing between MPVA and DPAA will play a crucial role in searching for our POWs and MIAs during the Korean War,” Kang said, addressing the gathered Gold Star Families. “This is a solemn pledge that both our countries will never forget the sacrifices and dedication of the Korean War MIAs and POWs.”
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs was established in August 1961. Initially created to manage affairs related to veterans and independence activists, it has since expanded its scope to include a broader range of patriotic services and commemorative activities. This ensures the sacrifices of these individuals are honored and supported, according to the ministry’s official website.
In 2023, the MPVA was upgraded to a full ministry, the equivalent of a U.S. cabinet position. The upgrade allows the ministry to better support veterans and patriots, providing them with more comprehensive benefits and recognition, and increasing its capacity to manage national commemorative events and facilities.
“We will never stop searching for POWs and MIAs until the very last person is returned to their home,” Kang said. “And I make a promise in front of you that this commitment and promise is built upon the ROK-U.S. alliance, which is ironclad and strong, and I promise that our trust and friendship will continue.”
