HANOI, Vietnam –
U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jason Kim has officially assumed command of Detachment 2, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in Hanoi, from Lt. Col. Travis Walter on July 25, 2025, marking a new chapter in the ongoing mission to recover and identify American service members missing from the Vietnam War.
"This is the most honorable assignment I could ever be entrusted with," Kim stated. "As an immigrant to this nation, the Army has been instrumental in shaping my life. I consider this opportunity to serve the families of the missing as a way to repay the debt of gratitude I owe to America."
Kim brings a diverse background to his new role. He began his Army career as a logistics officer before transitioning to a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer specializing in the Indo-Pacific region. His previous assignments include service in Korea and Japan, as well as a tour at the Defense Intelligence Agency within the Pentagon. He also served two tours in Iraq.
"My primary and most important goal as Detachment 2 Commander is to bring as many MIAs home as possible during my tenure," Kim declared. He aims to build upon the strong foundation already in place within Detachment 2, focusing on optimizing Joint Field Activity operations.
Beyond the core mission of recovery, Kim also highlighted his intention to enhance communication and outreach efforts. "DPAA and Detachment 2 are accomplishing remarkable work, and our mission naturally generates compelling and positive narratives. By effectively branding and communicating our efforts to key audiences, we can amplify our impact and further our mission of returning our fallen hero’s home from Vietnam." He aims to ensure the families of the missing are aware of the dedication and progress being made in the search for their loved ones.
Kim’s leadership style is characterized by a strong emphasis on teamwork and empowerment. "I highly value teamwork and believe in empowering subordinates," he explained. "My team starts with my full confidence and trust. I'm a firm advocate for prioritizing people and resolving issues at the lowest possible level."
DPAA’s mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting for missing U.S. personnel from past conflicts, offering answers to families and upholding the nation's commitment to those who served. Lt. Col. Kim’s arrival at Detachment 2 signals a renewed dedication to that mission, bringing hope and a promise to those still waiting for answers.
