WASHINGTON –
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced today that U.S. Army Pfc. Sylvester D. Haggins, 33, killed during World War II, was accounted for June 12, 2025.
In the summer of 1944, Haggins was assigned to the Medical Detachment, 364th Engineer General Service Regiment, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. On July 7, 1944, Haggins and members of his unit were clearing a German gun emplacement and ammunition dump at the Crisbecq Battery complex near Saint-Marcouf in Normandy, France, when something triggered an explosion, caving in the concrete roof and killing eight soldiers. Four of the casualties were recovered and identified, while the other four, including Haggins, were not.
This is an initial release. The complete accounting of Haggins's case will be published once the family receives their full briefing.
