Framework Arrangement Enables First Survey Mission for Americans Missing from World War II in Indonesia

By Sun Vega

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) signed a Framework Arrangement with the Government of Indonesia March 21 that permits the first DPAA joint research and survey mission later this year of Americans missing from World War II in Indonesia.

Concluding several years of coordination and multiple Secretary of Defense engagements, the two nations agreed to the commencement of DPAA field activities on Moratai Island that will progress the accounting efforts of more than 1,900 missing U.S. personnel who perished in Indonesia during World War II.

“With the signing of this arrangement, we are excited to begin our field work in the Republic of Indonesia this coming June,” said DPAA Director Kelly McKeague. “We are grateful to several agencies within the Indonesian government for helping us fulfill our promise to the U.S. Service members who made the supreme sacrifice for our nation and their families who have long sought answers on their missing loved ones.”

The Framework Arrangement follows through on last year’s joint press conference on November 21, with Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Indonesian Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto, where the minister expressed his strong support for DPAA’s humanitarian efforts in Indonesian territory.
