Lesley Chesson, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) forensic isotope laboratory manager, discusses how DPAA members use isotope testing for identifying human remains during a scientific summit at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, Sept. 22, 2022. Isotopes that are incorporated into body tissue, such as bone and teeth, are directly related to isotopes found in food and water, which vary based on geographic locations. Isotopes help scientists identify where a human is from. The summit enabled 29 subject matter experts and policy makers from 11 countries to discuss and exchange scientific practices methodologies in research, investigation, excavation and human identification with the intent to share and unify baseline professional requirements to ensure remains are handled appropriately in any host nation when pursuing missing persons from past conflicts worldwide.
